Fellow Namibians,

Theresia !Gorases
President of ANUK: Theresia !Gorases

I would like to use this opportunity to thank all Namibians, nationally and internationally who have shown interest and support in the operations of ANUK. It has been a challenge uniting our people, but you have all made it possible by being instrumental in being the leaders in assisting and indeed a partner in mobilizing the Namibian community and showing unity, not only in the UK but also across the globe.

The final draft of ANUK Constitution has been implemented. The document defines and outlines ANUK’s current structure, as well as our operational policy and practice. Copies are available on request.

The capacity in the organisation is growing, and our aim is to work towards meeting individual needs, by creating opportunities and empowering Namibian Nationals to achieve good quality life, both academically and socially. I am proud to say that Namibians are caring and loving people, and this you have demonstrated through showing unity and solidarity. Let us continue to show this through all our dealings.

ANUK recognises the work undertaken by individuals, and organisations that have contributed to sparking a new era in Namibian initiative. Organisations such as, Huisen Ltd, responsible for regrouping Namibians under a common umbrella, Hoadadi for making use of modern technology, empowering all Namibians all over the world to communicate at the click of a mouse, and spreading information about activities organised by ANUK.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the High Commissioner and Consulate, for the continual support and guidance.  As Namibian Nationals in the UK and under the banner of the Association of Namibian Nationals in the UK (ANUK) we pledge our support to your policies of reconciliation and growth and promise that in our daily conduct we will strive to be good Ambassadors of our beautiful country, Namibia.
I thank you all.

Theresa !Gorases

President of ANUK and Republic of Northern Ireland.

NAMmodelz Advises on how to build up your PORTFOLIO…

In the Modelling Industry, a Portfolio is your CV.

Any model knows that a PORTFOLIO is the most important investment in her/ his Modelling Career. You need the right portfolio to approach professional agencies. High street make over shots or home shots are just not good enough and not acceptable.

Every SUCCESSFUL model can build up a portfolio over time, as you take on more jobs.  The best way to update your portfolio is to UPDATE it every six months as, of course you change-your hair might be different and your weight might be fluctuating.
When you first start to get bookings, it does make sense to keep a second portfolio that contains your latest photos.

EXPRESSIONS
Well in some sense modelling is like ACTING. You are acting up to a camera, creating different emotions. I’m sure you have seen a great picture of a model in a Fashion magazine, and you see her in real life, you think “oh she looks so different”. Well... Agencies like versatility, Model who can master different looks and expressions to give agencies what agencies require.

INTERESTING FACT
Why Michael Jackson is such a legend with his moon walking… He mastered his dancing by practising in front of the mirror ALL THE TIME.  This can be indeed a TIP for you, as practicing does, indeed make perfect.  Try perfecting some POSES by practicing some expressions in front of the MIRROR.  Models who can only master one pose, are LIMITING themselves.  Check out some magazines and collect some tear sheets, you can always LEARN from other models.

NAMmodelz (Namibia’s SYMBOL OF Beauty)
  1. Could you tell us a bit about yourselves?

Gal Level is a musical group consisting of: Daphne Willibard and Frieda Haindaka. We both grew up surrounded by music and we both wanted to be musicians since we were born. We have been living together for the past four years. Its great living together, it’s easier to do our music that way. We are also great friends and that adds to the bond of the group.  We met about seven years ago through music. We formed the group in 2001 and have been a group ever since.`

  1. The first time we heard about Gal level was with the release of your hit single "Shake it", How long have you guys been singing now?

The release of shake it took Namibians by storm. People went crazy for the song and they even knew the Shake it dance!! We were blown away by the massive response we got.

  1. How would you describe your music?

Our music is Afrodelicfunk which is a fusion of R&B, Afro-pop, and Dancehall. Our music is for the young and the young at heart, so everyone who loves music can listen to it. We sing about a lot of stuff. We are mostly inspired by life itself and by issues in our societies.

  1. What else do u do career wise, except for music, or is music your main thing?

Daphne: I have a Diploma in Human Resources and I was employed by Bank Windhoek for five years up till 2007 when I resigned to concentrate on my music career.
Frieda: was employed by Sealand and Air (a clearing and forwarding Agency) for
the past 2 years and I also resigned in 2007 to concentrate on my music career.

5.  You feature in the recent HIV testing day advert, which is great, can you tell us a bit about that?

We feel it’s important to be involved in issues that affect our community and HIV affects all of us. We wanted to be a part of testing advert in order to encourage everyone to get tested. It’s really important to know your status.

  1. Between the two of you in the group, who's who? Who writes the songs, or comes with the initial idea of a song, who is the choreographer and so on.

We are both composers and authors of our music. We write all the lyrics to our songs. We work together with a choreographer in order to come with the moves. We try to come up with moves that are catchy and at the same time easy to do because we like to involve the audience on stage.

  1. You are working with Ogoba Butterfly, tell us a bit about them?

We met Sula( CEO of Butterfly Entertainment and artist manager ) in 2000. We were under his management back then when he was managing a group called “Dungeon Family, were both of us were members. The group broke up after a year. In 2001 we formed the group Gal Level and approached Sula to manage us as he was and still is the best in the business. He having known Ogopa Deejays from Kenya (and Ogopa being the best producer in East Africa) merged and together they became OgopaButterfly. It’s really great being under Ogopabutterfly because they are the best in the business and they are all about quality. One needs to work with the best in order to have good quality music and to have one of the best music videos in Africa.

  1. Any awards have you won so far or special achievements and how has that helped or influenced your music career?

Ever since the release of Shake it, we have won numerous awards namely: two awards at the Sanlam NBC Music Awards 2005 for Best Newcomers and Best R&B Group. In 2006 at the Namibian Music Awards we won two awards for best Group and Best Vocalists.  We were also the first Namibian Artists to be nominated for the Channel O African Music Awards in 2006. Our song “Go Back to Her” from our first album Shake it became No 1. Channel O Top Ten and No 3. MTV Base Top Ten.

In 2007 Lala from our second album Act like you know which was released in April 2007 was nominated for Channel O African Music Awards. We love that Channel O and MTVBase are promoting African music because it means that our music is heard by the whole of Africa and vice versa. It has opened doors for us because last year we were invited to perform at the Kisima Awards in Kenya and this year we will be going to Uganda for a show. We’ve also performed in South Africa a couple of times.

  1. By the look of your videos, it seems like you got loads of energy

on stage, is that because of editing or you could actually give an electrifying
            performance when live on stage?

We work very hard to ensure our stage performances are full of energy, so what you see in our videos does not even come close to seeing us live on stage!

  1. Which was your greatest performance would you say, and where have you performed outside Namibia?

One of our memorable performances has to be when we performed for the Channel O African Music Awards. It was such a big moment for us because we were the first Namibians (and females for that matter!! Our industry has been male dominated before we came to the scene) to perform there and the fact that millions of people all over Africa watched the show. We have also performed alongside big names like: Malaika, Bongo Maffin, Brikz, Ringo, Mzekezeke, Jamali and Mafikizolo.

  1. When do your fans in the UK or US get to see and also enjoy your stage

magic?

Performances in Europe and The United States are all in the pipeline. Our Label OgopaButterfly is busy organizing all that. We can confidently say you must all watch out for us this year because we’re definitely coming! For those who can’t wait, our videos are on You Tube. You can also chat to us on our website: www.ogopabutterfly.com

  1. Let's talk about your albums, how many do you have so far, and where or how can fans abroad buy your albums at the moment?

We have two albums so far: Shake it and Act like you know. Both albums have been received well. Both our albums are sold out so we have ordered more copies, which mean sales here have been very good. Our label is busy arranging that our album or songs are available for sale on line. Keep on logging on the website.

  1. What can we expect next from Gal level?

We’re currently working on our third album which will be launched in November
2008. We have been busy with shows all over Namibia ever since the beginning of
the year. We will be having another tour for three months here but before that we will
be performing in Uganda.
